Myles Pinkney's amazingly crisp, clear photographs are pleasingly arranged across the pages. Sandra Pinkney's carefully chosen words are given extra punch through a thoughtful use of changing colored fonts. A Pakistani girl peers through a transparent valentine lollipop. A Dutch girl blows a perfect pink sphere of bubblegum. A young Jordanian tap dancer poses in black tails and top hat. The text is spare and poetic, and the photographs are stunning, giving children the opportunity to name the colors of clothing and various objects in the photos as they repeat the refrain, "Colors are you. Colors are me." Even the typeface changes color. As in Pinkney's Shades of Black (2000), the message of racial awareness and tolerance is well served.
